My makeup was aging my face! I had to reassess and rethink my makeup, the routine and the products when I noticed that makeup was really aging me during my 40s. My skin was changing and those changes seemed incompatible with what I was putting on my face.
My skin stopped responding to the make-up I was applying. My foundation wasn’t color-matching to my skin very well, eye shadow colors were looking too harsh. Eyeliner was looking too heavy and I started to look really “old” and “tired”. So, I changed out products, looked at “new” ways of applying make-up, and visited an endless number of make-up counters/brands at department stores, big box and specialty beauty stores, hoping to find the right makeup “fit” for my skin. It literally took about 2 or 3 years of me doing that…which was stressful and frustrating, until I finally realized what was going on. My skin was aging and telling me it did not need the make-up!
My specific issue was foundation, which was something I NEVER went without. However, now that was becoming my nemesis and became an increasing challenge to find a foundation that would be a “perfect” color match, not greasy, not cacky, not drying and above all…not making me look “old”. I spent decent money on foundations and on brands that had a wider range of colors for brown skin tones, with sheer coverage, no talc, and with natural ingredients. However, one of the consistent problems I was noticing was that after a few hours of wearing the foundation, the product would get into the creases on my face and really highlight wrinkles. I wasn’t into hiding wrinkles, but because of the foundation, the lines were extremely visible. Almost as if I took a fine tip black pen and drew them in!
After almost three years of not finding the product that will work for me, I decided to quit using foundation, and for the most part, trimming down my makeup collection, and move into a different direction that really transformed my face to an even better version of itself, completely eradicating the stress involved in the whole make-up scene.
I don’t want to mislead you. I do wear “make-up”, but the products and the process has been completely transformed into a routine that attends to my overall minimal lifestyle aesthetic and skin health at 50.
