Self Care for Summer 2022

There have been many shifts within our society that have affected how we work and live in a now post-COVID lock-down society to one that, at least in America, roughly 67% of the population are vaccinated. Most of the workforce are back in different variations of in-person contact. Many others have leaned into the readjustments that have been made into the acceptance of newer interpretations of work-from-home and work-life-balance. While many other members of our society are relearning what it means to be a positive participant within this society. However, amidst all of the potential optimism many are endeavoring to experience, as a society we have been affected by the increased levels of stress, traumas, geo-political issues, mental illness, senseless violence and emotional oppression – where the deep need for actions that will rescue our population from destruction is necessary…beyond necessary actually….URGENT! We all the more must embrace what it means to practice “Self-Care”. Realizing that this IS our greatest need for wellness…for positive energy, balance and a healthy society. However, what does “self-care” really mean? How does it translate into our every day lives? What is that balance? What are those elements we identify as self-care?

Recently, I have been pondering this mandate for self-care with deep reflection. After all, how can I attend to my family, others or my work, if I am not properly taking care of…well…me? It has taken me a long time to come to terms with this awareness. So much now more than ever (it seems), that it was necessary to add “self care” to my list of must do’s. In fact, this personal need, has really allowed me to make myself a priority. I know it sounds a bit selfish, but it is imperative to be healthy and whole so that I can be the “ALL” I need to be for myself with healthy boundaries established for my family and others. Prioritizing myself and really understanding what wellness and wholeness means will be a liberating personal journey…my personal movement…as I learn it, live it and be it….Wholeness!

So what have I been doing to take care of myself? Here are my top ten wellness tips:

  1. Create your quiet space.
  2. Do deep breathing exercises to center your mind, body and spirit…to cleanse, heal and rejuvenate.
  3. Drink plenty of water and eat clean food.
  4. Remove yourself from toxic people, environments or energy.
  5. Talk to a professional to help you work through stress, relationships and challenges.
  6. Listen to music that nourishes your soul and feeds your spirit.
  7. Journal…collecting your thoughts on paper.
  8. Take a walk with no particular destination in mind.
  9. Stretch…to release stress and tension.
  10. Take time to pause and reflect for beauty and peace.
