The Reinvention of Self

Where do you see yourself in a year? In five years? In ten years? How many of us recall being asked that question several times throughout our lifetime? What has been your response? What stage or phase in your life did that question take you to? What did it cause you to ponder about your direction, your journey?

I always found those kinds of questions rather challenging because it seemed to create life’s journey moving along an absolute path, placing great emphasis towards a targeted direction or a timetable to think about. Quite frankly, when I was younger (in my 20s) and shared my reflections around this topic, I would say something that sounded pretty amazing to my ears and would be on par to what I viewed as successful at that time. However, truthfully I would have wanted to say, “I really don’t know.”

Now that is no longer a straight forward question to answer. At least not so in my maturing age (I’m 53). Of course I know how I would like things to plan out (and they typically do), but when I was younger, I had a very focused, linear direction to what I wanted to achieve and accomplish. Which in looking back I achieved everything I wanted to. Now, however, I embrace the evolved reality that there are many, many options towards specific goals. That once a goal is met, it can become more nuanced and ever evolving…ever growing. It can be the added chapters to an amazing saga on an exhilarating journey.

Everyone should have goals, however attainment should never be finite, but continuous movement…movement towards those goals with many options. Then when an option doesn’t work or if the goal changes, let’s give ourselves permission to make adjustments. To dismantle the idea and reassemble it. To dismantle the goal and reassemble it; reassign it and move through the cycle all over again. Then allow ourselves to be at peace with that continuous process.

So I ask you, where do you see yourself in a year? Five years? Ten years? I hope you see yourself continuing on the journey of reinventing who you are and the self you are molding into for the next phases of your life’s journey…happy, at peace…relaxed.
