I am often asked questions about style: How can one become stylish or what is my definition of “Style”? Though there is much to say on this topic, as it seems to connect to how an individual wear their clothes or live their lives; eliciting those external acts of being “stylish”. I believe style is deeper and more organic. It is cultivating an inner stillness, a quiet elegance that radiates from within. It’s about recognizing that the essence of style is not in what we do, but in how we are centering ourselves and being in tune with the sense of quiet…the stillness within us….as our sense of style.
Stillness, in this context, is not inactivity. It’s a deliberate act of self-possession. It’s about creating space for reflection, for discernment, for simply being present. It’s about silencing the external noise to hear the quiet wisdom within. It’s the ability to move through the world with grace and a regal composure, grounded in a deep sense of self.
For me, stillness is the foundation upon which my personal style is built. It’s the quiet confidence that allows me to choose clothing, accessories, and experiences that reflect my authentic self. It’s the ability to appreciate the beauty of simplicity, to find joy in quiet moments and to cultivate a sense of inner peace. In a world that constantly demands our attention, stillness becomes a radical act of self-care. It allows us to:
- Reconnect with our values: By creating space for reflection, we can clarify what truly matters to us and align our choices with our core principles.
- Enhance our discernment: Stillness sharpens our intuition, allowing us to make decisions with clarity and confidence.
- Cultivate inner peace: In a world of constant change, stillness provides a sanctuary of calm, a refuge from the chaos.
- Embody authentic presence: When we are grounded in stillness, we radiate a quiet confidence that draws others to us.
- Define our personal aesthetic: It is from a place of stillness that we can curate a style that resonates with who we are, not who we think we should be.
As we center stillness and refocus it as self-care, how do we embody stillness as style? How do we make it a part of our continuous evolution of self? Below, I offer a few ideas that I practice in my life as I embody stillness as my style:
- Practice Mindful Moments: Integrate moments of quiet reflection into your daily routine. Even a few minutes of deep breathing or mindful observation can make a difference.
- Cultivate Intentional Simplicity: Declutter your physical and mental space, making room for what truly brings you joy and peace.
- Embrace Contemplative Activities: Engage in activities that nurture your inner world, such as journaling, meditation, or spending time in nature.
- Curate a Personal Aesthetic: Choose clothing and accessories that reflect your values and your unique style. Focus on quality over quantity, and prioritize pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable.
- Listen to Your Inner Voice: Pay attention to your intuition, and trust your inner guidance.
- Embrace Solitude: Find joy in spending time alone, allowing yourself to connect with your inner self.
- Move with Grace: Be mindful of your movements, cultivating a sense of poise and composure.
- Engage in an Activity that Inspires: That may be doing art, sculpting, reading…for me solo “window” shopping where cool boutiques exists inspires me.
Stillness is not a destination, but a journey. It’s a continuous practice, a lifelong exploration of our inner selves. At 54, I’ve discovered that it’s the most authentic expression of my style, a quiet elegance that radiates from the depths of my being. It is about engaging with the world from a place of inner strength and serenity. It’s about creating a style and well-being that truly reflects who you are – a timeless elegance born from the quiet power of stillness.
Let’s embrace the beauty of simplicity, the power of presence and the elegance of stillness. It’s in this quiet sanctuary that we discover our true strength, our true beauty.
