We crave certainty. We want to “know” and “understand” every aspect of a situation before we dare to move forward or “make sense” of what’s happening before making decisions. However, what if that constant quest for clarity is actually holding us back? What if the relentless pursuit of understanding is simply too stressful? I’ve discovered a liberating alternative: leaning into the unknown.
As an over achiever and meticulous planner by nature, this concept was initially daunting. Yet, I’ve found myself over the last few years increasingly releasing the grip of overthinking and meticulous planning. Perhaps it’s the wisdom that comes with my 50+ years of age, a gentle nudge from my maturer self. My younger self, undoubtedly, was a staunch advocate for “perfectionism,” driven by an insatiable desire to “get it all right.”
Don’t misunderstand me; I still value efficiency and strive for excellence – or at least something close to it. However, I’m gradually shedding the burden of this relentless need for perfection. I no longer feel the compulsion to “prove” myself, to justify my worth through flawless execution.
Instead, I’m embracing a new rhythm, a more intentional pace. At this stage of life, there’s little need to rush. I’m learning to simply “do,” to take action without the paralyzing weight of endless analysis.
More importantly, I’m becoming incredibly selective about the work I undertake. I’ve made an affirmative pledge to myself: to engage only in opportunities that ignite joy within me. I’m discovering that my true calling lies in finding pleasure in the work I choose itself…what I create as my joy work.
Imagine the freedom of releasing the need to know everything, of trusting that the path will unfold as you walk it. Imagine the joy of pursuing work that truly resonates with your soul.
This shift isn’t about abandoning all planning or throwing caution to the wind. It’s about finding a balance. It’s bout trusting your intuition and embracing the inherent uncertainty of life. It’s about understanding that sometimes, the greatest discoveries are made when we dare to step into the unknown.
So, I invite you to join me in this journey. Let’s release the need to overthink, over plan and over achieve and lean into discovering the beautiful, unpredictable adventure that awaits. Selecting and discovering the joy in the work we choose..Finding our calling in the work we choose and love.
