Style Inspiration-The Black Sweater

Inspirations from Net-A-Porter (from left): Alice + Olivia, Le Kasha, Balenciaga, Loewe, CEFINN

I like sweaters during the fall and winter seasons. They are my cold weather alternatives to the blouse and jeans combo I usually wear during the warmer months and the most worn…my go to item. Also, I do wear a lot of black. For me it’s easy to pull a look together and add a piece of statement jewelry, jacket, amazing shoe/boot and fantastic handbag for that pop of color. Again…I am about effortless (and comfortable) style. I have found amazing black sweaters at Uniqlo, J. Crew, H & M, Zara and Akira.

What to add to your sweater collection?

  1. Sweaters that are a bit oversized
  2. Chunky, textures sweaters
  3. Puff sleeved sweaters
  4. Sweater with an unexpected wow factor like the one shown in the center found on Net-A-Porter.

What to avoid? Sweaters that are made out of synthetic fibers (polyester, rayon, acrylic, etc). They do not hold up well, they pile and will look quite awful after a few months. I prefer natural fibers like cashmere and merino wool and some wool blends. Many textile factories are re-engineering wool fibers to be machine washable. I actually machine wash most of my wool sweaters (later I’ll do a post on clothing care that extends the life of your clothes).

Remember, effortless chic style begins with fining those basic pieces that are of excellent quality, that’s minimal, versatile and can remain in your wardrobe for years.

Peace…

Love the cold weather and sweaters. I like to buy good quality sweaters. I have a few that are over 20 years old and the styles are timeless.

I love it! The vintage ones are the best.
