I want to center and celebrate the incredible power and impact of women leaders in our 50s. We are a demographic with experience, wisdom and a unique perspective that’s often overlooked, underrepresented or perceived as in need of support, guidance or mentoring by those younger than ourselves. I am humored by these notions, (amplified by the experiences) especially now that I am on the other side of 50. We are not fading into the background, but rather have stepped into our power. We’re not in need of guidance. We are the guides.
Let’s be honest. We’ve faced challenges. Ageism is a real thing. Bias, both conscious and unconscious, is a hurdle we’ve learned to navigate, often while wearing heels! We’ve seen trends come and go, adapted to technological shifts that would make younger generations dizzy, and built networks that span decades. We’ve earned our place and position.
However, what’s often overlooked in these narratives of “support” is the sheer wealth of experience we bring to the table. We’ve seen what works and, more importantly, what doesn’t. We’ve learned from our mistakes (and everyone else’s), honed our leadership skills through years of practice, and developed a level of resilience that can only come from weathering the storms of professional life.
We possess a unique perspective, a nuanced understanding of the world that comes from lived experience. We’ve seen how decisions impact not just the bottom line, but also the people involved. We understand the importance of mentorship, not because we need it, but because we’ve provided it. We value collaboration, not because it’s a buzzword, but because we know that diverse teams produce the best results.
And yes, we’re adaptable. We’ve reinvented ourselves countless times throughout our careers. We’re not afraid of change; we embrace it. We’re not stagnant; we’re constantly learning and evolving. We are the very definition of lifelong learners, because we know that staying relevant is not a choice, it’s a necessity.
It’s time we shift the narrative and celebrate the remarkable contributions of our seasoned professionals. Let’s explore some of the key traits that make us, the woman over 50, so impactful:
1. Mastering the Craft: Women in our 50s have often spent decades honing our skills and expertise. We’ve navigated complex projects, mentored rising stars, and weathered economic storms. This deep well of experience translates into confident decision-making, strategic thinking, and an ability to see the big picture while still managing the details. We aren’t just good at our jobs; we’re masters of them.
2. Resilience through Strength: Challenges will come. It is a natural facet of life. However, we face those challenges, overcome obstacles, and learn from multiple setbacks. This resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about growing stronger and wiser through adversity. This strength empowers us to navigate uncertainty and lead our teams through challenging times with unwavering resolve.
3. A Powerful Network and the Wisdom to Use It: Years of experience mean years of building relationships. As women in our 50s, we often possess extensive and powerful networks. More importantly, we understand how to leverage these connections for the benefit of our teams, our organizations and ourselves. We are skilled at collaboration and know how to build consensus.
4. Mentorship and Empowerment: Having climbed the ladder, we often feel a strong desire to help others do the same. We become natural mentors, sharing our wisdom, offering guidance, and empowering the next generation of leaders. We understand the importance of creating opportunities for others and fostering a supportive work environment.
5. Authenticity and Self-Awareness: By this stage in our careers, many of us have shed the need to conform and are comfortable in our own skin. We bring our authentic selves to the table, embracing our unique strengths and perspectives. This self-awareness allows us to lead with integrity and build trust with our teams.
6. Balance and Perspective: As women in our 50s, we have a clearer understanding of what truly matters in life. This perspective translates into a more balanced approach to leadership, prioritizing well-being, fostering healthy work-life integration and creating a more sustainable pace for our teams.
7. Advocacy and Impact: We are charged to use our influence to advocate for positive change, both within our organizations and the wider community. We are passionate about making a difference and leveraging our experience to create a better future.
It’s crucial that in the workplace, (and society at large), we move beyond marginalized perceptions of women in our 50s. That those rising leaders or supervisors younger than us, need not feel insecure about their role, position and relevance, but work in partnership with us who have been in their shoes for greater motivation and production in the workplace. Not diminishing that fact, we are relevant. We are a powerful blend of experience, wisdom, and drive. By recognizing and celebrating our unique strengths as employees or leaders in our roles and capacity, we create more inclusive and successful organizations.
Let’s stop assuming that women over 50 are somehow less capable, less driven, or less valuable. In need of “support” if we take a different approach in achieving maximized success. Instead, let’s celebrate the incredible contributions we make to the business world. Let’s recognize the creativity, wisdom, joy, experience and leadership that we bring. Let us create a workplace where our voices are heard, our contributions are valued, and our leadership is celebrated. We are in our power as an amazing force…and we are just getting started.
Be inspired. Be empowered. Be Fabulous!
