I love wearing denim. It has literally become my most necessary and most worn articles of clothing in my wardrobe. As I am thinking about what to wear today to visit my mom who is in a nursing care facility, I stare at the options I have available. For me, dressing is a highly calculated affair as I have to consider weather conditions, fit, where I am going and above all, COMFORT!
I emphasize comfort because as a woman at 54, who is in Menopause, with fluctuating heat conditions, and now a much more expanded size, Comfort and ease of wear become key factors in everything I curate in my wardrobe.
For my lifestyle however, denim is more than just a fabric; it’s a versatile staple, offering both durability and style. For women over 50, curating an amazing collection of denim articles can become a statement of effortless chic. With its utilitarian benefits and timeless appeal, denim can be transformed into a sophisticated wardrobe that exudes confidence and comfort.
What appeals to me the most about denim for women over 50 is its practicality, ease of care and extreme versatility. Whether dressing for a casual outing, the workplace or a more formal event, denim can seamlessly transition between occasions. It provides comfort, style and flexibility which become essential attributes I look for in what I wear at this amazing age. Also, the styling freedom denim allows. I can literally reach into my closet and pull what I am going to wear without overthinking it.
Curating Denim | A Focus on Styles
The key to achieving an amazing denim collection is assessing what you are looking for. What do you want to add? What do you need? How do you want your denim article to fit and ultimately, how do you want to feel in that article? Also, it is helpful to understand the style denim pieces you want to add. For example, rigid denim (denim without stretch) which is my preference in particular, offers a structured silhouette that can flatter the figure while providing a polished appearance. This type of denim can be luxuriated or very supple and casual, while maintaining structure and form. When curating your denim collection, consider a variety of styles:
- Bell Bottoms and Flare Jeans: These nostalgic silhouettes can elongate the legs and add a vintage flair to your outfit.
- Straight-Leg Jeans: A timeless choice that can be dressed up or down, perfect for any occasion.
- High-Waisted Denim: This style provides support and shape, enhancing your natural waistline.
- Distressed vs. Structured Denim: Distressed denim offers a relaxed, casual vibe, while structured denim can be more refined and polished.
Each of these styles can be paired with amazing tops, blazers, or even layered with lightweight cardigans to create a look that is both sophisticated and effortless. The beauty of denim lies in its diversity. From classic straight-leg jeans to trendy high-waisted options, every piece can be tailored to suit a variety of style, body shapes and lifestyle needs.
Ultimately, denim is an essential element in my wardrobe and can be in yours, especially for those of us over 50. Its adaptability allows for personal expression and projecting a vibe that exudes confidence because it is literally fail-proof. When I don’t know what to wear, I reach for a pair of jeans, a cashmere sweater and a blazer paired with a belt and boots. Done! Which is what I think I will wear today to visit my mom (sans the blazer and belt). Instead I will pair with a cherry red puffer jacket.
In this stage of my life, the art of curating denim creates for me the platform that focuses on what is classic, yet modern and always timeless. Developing over time through curating and collecting my favorite objects of art….denim. Then going back into my collection…always editing, sourcing, reflecting, rearranging and reestablishing the case for denim as a necessary functional element that just…works! The art of curating your denim collection lies in embracing what you need, how it fits into your lifestyle, what is comfortable and how it looks on you.
