The 20-Piece Shift: Simplifying My Closet for the Pre-Fall Transition | Volume 3, Issue 18

When you feel relaxed, you look your best—and when you look your best, you naturally feel like the most grounded version of yourself. True style isn’t about keeping up with a relentless newsfeed of trends; it’s an anti-anxiety tool. It’s the intentional choice to step away from decision fatigue and step into clothes that make you feel instantly at ease.

As we step into September, we find ourselves in that crisp, pre-fall transition. Summer’s heat is mellowing, school routines are fully underway, work calendars are ramping up, and the new season calls for a subtle shift in our daily rhythm. Instead of letting the autumn rush create sartorial chaos, I’m leaning heavily into my ultimate anchor: keeping it simple, comfortable, and deeply personal.

For me, style has evolved over the years from a daily “What am I going to wear today…” into a reliable style uniform:

  • The Foundation: Oversized, loose, and expressive denim. Whether it’s raw cutoffs on warmer days, baggy barrel cuts, or sweeping wide-leg flares, comfort reigns.
  • The Core Tops: Boxy tees, crisp white or suiting-blue button-downs, romantic poet-style blouses with neck ties, and as the air cools, rich textured knits—from soft cashmere to chunky wool.
  • The Go-To Layer: A well-structured blazer that pulls everything together effortlessly.
  • The No-Brainer: Head-to-toe denim on denim. It’s my ultimate fallback for mornings when time or inspiration is short.
  • The Anchor: Great, comfortable footwear—from low-key flip-flops to statement boots and tabbies—that keeps me grounded.

Because my lifestyle has shifted away from rigid business wear, I’m actively archiving the pieces I no longer reach for. To put this anti-anxiety philosophy to the test, I’m challenging myself to a 30-Day Pre-Fall Capsule Challenge. Beginning today, September 1, and running through September 30, I’m curating just 20 core pieces—tops, denim, jackets, a favorite skirt, and signature shoes—onto one accessible rack. I’ll be wearing these essentials on repeat to see how simplifying my closet transforms my daily rhythm as pre-fall unfolds.
