Have you ever sat back and watched a documentary that completely captivated you?

You watch the opening scene. A quiet query or an intriguing question is posed. Then, frame by frame, you see the story unfold. You watch the characters navigate unexpected turns, step into promising opportunities, face challenging setbacks, and uncover lessons they didn’t anticipate.
Lately, at 56, I’ve found myself looking at my own life through that exact lens.
When you view your life as a documentary, something deeply liberating happens. You stop judging every plot twist as a final verdict. Instead, you step back and see the full arc…the beauty, the mystery, the pivot points, and the sheer evolution of who you are becoming.
The Unexpected Plot Twists
Throughout my life, I’ve made decisions that were good…even excellent…at the time. However, as time moved on, some of those decisions sometimes triggered reactions or outcomes I hadn’t planned for…both empowering and challenging.
That is human nature. When things don’t unfold the way we mapped them out, it’s easy to slip into the familiar cycle of doubt, self-criticism, casting blame or ruminating.
Here is what I’ve learned…It’s okay to feel those things.
Feeling the weight of an outcome that didn’t go as planned is part of being reflective. It means you’re attending to your life. It allows you to say, “That didn’t feel good when I went through it,” or “That turned out amazingly well, even if it was purely accidental.”
When you honor every season, including the ones where things do not fall into place as hoped or cycles come to an end, you realize it’s simply time to recalibrate. You don’t retreat, rather, you adjust the focal lens and keep moving forward.
Growing, Learning, and Holding No Regrets
I love my life. I have always loved who I am, what I do, the paths I’ve journeyed and the one I am on…right now. Reaching this milestone (through experience and age) brings a powerful sense of liberation.
- I value my creativity, independence and autonomy.
- I don’t feel the need to live by anyone else’s expectations.
- I hold space for growth without holding onto regrets.
When you refuse to hold regrets, you free up energy to build a life rich with options and purpose. You recognize that even the moments that felt like stumbles were just essential scenes driving your documentary forward.
The Art of Forward Motion & Strategic Vision
Documentaries are built on motion and growth. Just as life too requires continuous movement for positive evolution. Here is where I tend to think in focused cycles, organizing my plans and accomplishments within three to six month pivot points, or as multi-year journeys. Which allows me to embark on a project or a new season in the following manner:
- Inception & Execution: What am I building, and how long will this season take?
- Assessment & Reflection: What is this experience teaching me?
- The Long-Term ROI: What is the lasting return on investment for my growth, my purpose, and my future?
Whether a initiative takes three months or three years from inception to evaluation, every effort is an investment in the long term. Life is not retreating when the script changes…it is leaning into the momentum of creation.
Curating Your Next Chapter
If you were to step back today and watch the film of your own life, what would you see?
Can you offer yourself grace for the decisions that took an unexpected turn? Can you celebrate the accidental wins? Can you appreciate the current season for what it is, while preparing to pivot into the next?
Your life is a living, breathing work of art. Honor every frame, learn from every plot twist, keep moving forward, and build a story you love watching.
Your Reflection Moment: What phase of your life’s documentary are you currently in? What positive shift would you like to experience in the next 30 days? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please share your comments here.
